Description
In case you are not familiar with the story of thieves:
According to folklore, in the year 1413 and during the time of the Bubonic Plague or Black Death, four thieves were arrested for stealing from the homes of the sick and dying. When brought before the magistrate, they were offered a lighter death sentence (hanging as opposed to being burned alive) in exchange for their secret for not catching the plague, despite being close to the infected and handling their items.
The thieves told the magistrate that they were perfume and spice merchants who came up with a plan upon losing their jobs due to the plague causing closures of sea ports. What they did was to create an essential oil blend, when placed on their hands, ears, temples, feet and on a mask covering their noses and mouths, protected them from infection.
Once the secret was out, doctors who treated the plague used this blend as above- which included stuffing a cloth dipped in the blend into their beak like masks.
